Varanasi Handloom Weavers

These images were made as part of a personal project on the handloom weavers in Varanasi. I looked at personal stories of weavers who couldn't access adequate health interventions based on their income, the threats to their health - including the river in which they bathe, as well as the threats to their traditional livelihood - like mechanised looms. They have little access to infrastructure and are often waiting to work based on the electricity supply. Many have left weaving to join the agricultural schemes under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). Now, almost all weavers send their children to school, to ensure that they will not have to become handloom weavers - putting the final nail into the coffin for this rich and intricate skill.
